Sunday Morning Sesson - What is leadership? PDF Print E-mail
Dan Rexroth

Dan Rexroth reminded us that we can influence as many as 10,000 people during our lifetime. He posed four questions.

1. What is my purpose in life?

Answer: Relationships. Dan referred to Matt. 22:36-39, best known as the "Greatest Commandment." We are to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." The second commandment is to love others as ourselves. We can’t do either of these without relationships.

2. How can I continue to mature as a Christian leader?

Answer: Spiritual Disciplines. Two good sources on the spiritual disciplines are Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline and Wesley Tracy’s et al The Upward Call.

3. What’s the secret to leadership?

Answer: 1. Vision—purpose and direction

2. Passion—which actually means suffering

3. Attractiveness—something about you that makes people want to follow you

4. What are some things I must never forget as a Christian leader?

Answer: 1. Be a Listener—be an authentic listener. Listen to what a person is saying rather than forming your reply.

2. Be a Learner—it’s what you learn after you know it all that matters. We must be life-long learners.

3. Be a Lowly Person—that is practice humility. Does "because I can" mean I should? Consider this question when making major purchases.

4. Be Loving—Gal. 5:22—live with the fruit of the Spirit evident in your life.

Linda’s Thoughts: Interesting that all the characteristics of a leader are rooted in relationships. Throughout the weekend, we were confronted with our need for relationships and learned they are foundational to living effective Christian lives.

Notice how all the keys for a leader point back to strengthening our relationship with Jesus.

As a teacher, I appreciated Dan’s emphasis on being a life-long learner. As we become comfortable in our careers, it is easy to think we’ve reached the point where we have many, if not all, the answers. That’s why I think this statement is so powerful—it’s what you learn after you know it all that matters.

Let’s covenant to learn together!
