Sunday Evening Session - Greatness! PDF Print E-mail
 Mike Fetting

Mike Fetting challenged us to think about greatness from a different perspective. Using Matt. 18:1-4, he reminded us that in God’s Kingdom greatness is defined from a servant perspective. Mike defined greatness as the ability to be humble like a child and to have complete dependence on God.

Mike gave us these steps for growing in humility:

1. Pray for humility.

2. Be aware of your weaknesses and limitations.

3. Spend time with people who are more gifted than you.

4. Spend time with humble people.

5. Serve others.

Linda’s Thoughts: In today’s culture, the higher your position, salary, status, and so on, the more successful you’re deemed to be. Servant leadership is not easily understood in secular culture.

We often use the imagery of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet as the prime example of servant leadership. Have you really thought what it was like to wash someone’s feet in biblical society? They wore sandals and shared the roadway with donkeys and other animals. Talk about smelly feet!

As we strive to become servant leaders, we must also exercise caution so we don’t become candidates to write the book My Humility and How I Achieved It! We demonstrate servant leadership as we help, encourage, and support others.

What a difference we could make if those of us at Breckenridge ’08 became servant leaders. Is this part of the deeper "yes" Dr. Middendorf challenged us to keep saying? Probably, but as a community we can begin the journey. Will you join me?
